1. What is EZB Call Article?
The EZB Call Article is a form that allows you to request a specific article and determine its availability at your institution. To do this, you must enter the article metadata and you will then be taken to a list of direct links to the article and, if applicable, an additional open access link.
2. What should be considered when using this form?
This function is not an article search in the traditional sense, meaning you cannot access relevant articles using keywords. To do so, please use your institute’s catalog or other comparable search options. Furthermore, the form is not a search tool for journals as a whole. To search for journals, please use the EZB’s regular search function.
3. How does the EZB Call Article work?
The form is designed to help you gain direct access to a specific article via the EZB if you already have certain information about the article, for example because you became aware of it through a citation with a DOI. In this case, the form checks your access rights via the EZB linking service and, if possible, directs you to direct full-text links. This works if you access the EZB via your institution’s network (or alternatively via a VPN connection) and thus obtain access rights to the relevant journals via your institution’s licenses. In many cases, the EZB’s open access extended linking service also provides freely accessible full-text links to the articles you are looking for.
4. Access via DOI
When searching, it is important that you enter enough information in the search box of the form to clearly identify the article you are looking for. The easiest way to do this is to use the DOI, or Digital Object Identifier. This is a unique, consistent reference for articles and is comparable to an ISBN number for books or an ISSN number for journals. If you know the DOI, simply enter it in the corresponding field and then click on “Call article.”
5. Access via other metadata
If the DOI is unknown, it is also possible to access an article unambiguously by combining other information. In this case, it is best to enter both the ISSN (i.e., the number that uniquely identifies a specific journal) and the exact year and issue in which the article appeared. Finally, you will need the starting page of the article in the corresponding issue. By entering this combined information, you enable the EZB linking service to provide a direct full-text link, if available.
The less information you enter, the less specific the link provided will be and the more you will have to search manually for the desired article on the corresponding websites. For example, if you only know the journal and year of publication of the article, as well as the title and author, the EZB linking service can only refer you to the corresponding publisher’s website and there only to the relevant volume page. Here you can then search the individual issues manually, preferably using the tables of contents, for the desired article.
